Welcome to Gary Conger Art
A small-town boy from Ohio, I have always been in awe of New York’s many giant buildings. As a painter who’s had studios in three different Manhattan buildings, I’ve enjoyed views of many rooftops. This “roofscape” with its pipes and vents, its skylights and water towers, was the primary focus of my early work, especially the water towers. The mammoth water tanks are made of wood and hold the water supply for the buildings they sit on. Like Monet with his hay bales, I began to paint the tanks in many different lights, day and night. In my later paintings, I began to show the massive tanks breaking free of the metal struts that they're anchored to and floating or even rocketing away to other places free of all their duties.
When I retired from the corporate world, I decided to sign up for drawing and painting classes at the School of Visual Arts. From SVA’s excellent instructors, I gained the confidence to paint other subjects besides the water tanks: landscapes, still lifes, human and animal portraits, reclining nudes, and some fantasy paintings (models please apply), just for the fun of it. My current drawing and painting interest is the human face which in my view is the most challenging of all painted subjects.

Stay tuned.
